1890 Copper-nickel 1C Indian Cent NGC XF40 (PHOTO SEAL)
Extremely Fine (9: 3,3,3). Listed as a pattern, J-1758. It is actually a wrong planchet error. Only a few examples are known. HHow could this happen? It is obviously not a three cent nickel planchet and it is not the same color as the 25% nickel stock that three cent and five cent nickel coins are made of. It looks very similar to the 12% nickel planchets used for the 1856-1864 cents. It is a little thinner than those planchets. This year the cent planchets were produced by Scovill Manufacturing Company of Waterbury CT. Perhaps the wrong stock was used to make planchets at that factory and then made its way to the Mint where it was stamped in the cent press.
