Choice XF (9: 3,3,3) A very scarce date with a very low mintage of only 25,900. As Shield nickels were withdrawn from circulation beginning in 1883. The diameter of the shield nickel is slightly less than the Liberty nickel. With the vending industry beginning at this time, the shield nickels were causing problems and had to be removed from circulation. Perhaps as few as 300 exist in all grades.
