1878 $1 Morgan Dollar J-1550a PCGS PR64+CAM (CAC)

Gem Proof (14: 4,5,5) Pollock-1723. A rare prototype design that differs slightly from the adopted issue. There are three leaves on the sprig in the eagle's talon. The base of the eagle's wings are attached to the body. The small M on the bow is missing. On the obverse the head is rotated slightly from the final design. The wheat stalk touches the I in PLURIBUS. An outstanding original example with deep mirrors and frosted devices. There is a light golden tone. There are only a few wispy hairlines here and there, but nothing that distracts. There is a small lint strike-through by the base of the 1 in the date. The listing in Pollock differentiates the obverse change and lists it as a Rarity-7 (4 to 12 known). Judd lists both P-1723 and P-1725 as J-1550a and rates them as R6 (13-30 known). There are only 4 graded by PCGS with the cameo designation and this is the only P-1723.
