1877 1C Indian Cent NGC MS65RB (PHOTO SEAL)
Gem Unc (15: 5,5,5) RB 90%. Prooflike first strike. This is a unique example of the 1877 Indian cent. It is the earliest die state ever seen! It is prooflike, similar to a proof, but it is definitely not a proof, having the Shallow N reverse. Only one reverse die was used to strike the 1877 Indian and with the sole exception of this coin, they all have backward L-shaped die clash to the NW of the O in ONE. I wrote in my book that the die clash (or clashes, as they progressively increased in number during production) were a diagnostic. Not any more. This is the only example ever seen. We are lucky that is was kept in such pristine condition. It is virtually flawless and close to full red. It is also a full strike. It is a glistening gem!
