1863 Hunting Dogs - Union Civil War Token F-184/427d NGC MS67

Superb Gem Unc (12: 4,5,4). The fabulous and rare Hunting Dogs struck in copper nickel. This is one of the best designs of the Civil War Token series featuring Two dogs on the hunt. The design is amazing when one considers that the design was engraved directly into the die steel. The engraver is noted at the "Rhode Island die sinker." This is a very rare die pair and the only example graded by NGC. In "The Civil War Tokens of Rhode Island" by Bowers, its rarity as R9, which is 2 to 4 known. The planchet was roughly worked prior to striking and planchet marks that are not struck out are visible on both side on the high points. The token is otherwise free of marks. This is a stunningly beautiful piece and worthy of the best collections of Civil War Tokens.
