1859 Shield Reverse 1C Indian Cent NGC MS65 (PHOTO SEAL)
Gem Unc (14: 5,5,4). The Shield Reverse (Type of 1860) was adopted in December of 1859 and about 1,000 examples were struck before the end of the year. These were earlier listed as patterns (J-228), likely due to the fact that the entire mintage was held back and not released into circulation. Maybe a dealer bought them all. It was only $10 face value, so that is possible. All were later released into numismatic channels and preserved. These are now listed in the Red Book as regular issues. This is a very attractive example with hardly a mark. It is pedigreed to the Exemplar collection which was distributed about 10 years ago.
