(1844) Hope/ Game birds F-481-489b brass MS64 PCGS

Although dated 1844, this is a Civil War token as it is believed that the dies were engraved and the medals struck in late 1864 or early 1865. The reverse is the Rhode Island shield with the date "1844" below. The reason for the date is mysterious. Perhaps it has something to do with the Millerite movement which predicted the return of Jesus Christ that year.

The obverse features two game birds. The engraving is outstanding and obviously made directly into the steel die. The size is 34 mm - about the size of a half dollar. Coin turn. There is evidence of multiple strikes to bring up the design fully. A light finger print and small spot on the reverse limit the grade. This is a R9 token, with under four examples believed to have been struck.
